Everton have been linked with a move for Ben Brereton Diaz since the summer, and a reliable source has given an update on the club’s pursuit of the player ahead of the January transfer window.
What’s the latest?
According to journalist Dean Jones, the Toffees are “definitely” keen on signing the Blackburn Rovers forward when the transfer window reopens next month.
The transfer expert told GIVEMESPORT: “Getting a new striker in is really important for them and it’s definitely something that they’re looking at.
“Brereton Diaz would take a really strong bid from Everton to get him because there is such a high level of interest around him at the moment. I know that Everton like him – that’s definitely the case.”
Forget Calvert-Lewin
There is no doubt that Frank Lampard will be putting together his targets in preparation for the winter transfer window, especially after Everton’s inconsistent run of performances so far in 2022/23.
Only Wolverhampton Wanderers have scored fewer goals in the Premier League than the Toffees since the season started, which has left Lampard’s team on the edge of the relegation zone, just one point clear of the bottom three.
As a result, the signing of a striker who can deliver consistent goal-scoring opportunities and convert chances in front of goal has become an urgent priority at Goodison Park.
Brereton Diaz has been a long-term target for the Merseysiders and was closely linked with a move to the club right up until the final hours of transfer deadline day in the summer, so it would be no surprise if Everton were to try again for the talented forward.
In 23 Championship appearances this term, the £20m-valued ace – who was dubbed a “terrific player” by writer Chris Thorpe-Tracey – has scored nine goals, registered three assists and created five big chances, along with averaging one key pass, 2.7 shots on goal and 2.8 duels won per game.
With a player like Brereton Diaz on the books, Lampard could finally forget about Dominic Calvert-Lewin and can stop relying on the injury-prone Everton goal machine to provide the bulk of the team’s goal contributions.
Furthermore, the Blackburn Rovers ace is extremely versatile in his positioning, so could he even play alongside the 25-year-old whenever the latter is fit to participate.
Brereton Diaz predominantly plays as a centre-forward but has also featured 91 times in the wider positions in the final third, capable of delivering his outstanding output on both the right and left flanks as well as through the middle.
Signing the Chile international would be a major coup for the Toffees and could be the difference between securing safety in the Premier League or suffering relegation at the end of the season.
